The subtropical dry deciduous scrub and scattered cheer pine forests on the foothills of Siwaliks passes upward into the subtropical evergreen and sub-temperate vegetation of the hilly terrain of Siwaliks to the mixed deciduous and moist temperate and dry temperate forests of Sub-Himalaya and Pir panjal to the subalpine forest, alpine pastures and alpine scrubs of higher up Pir panjal range and higher Himalayas. Above the tree line, plant growth is limited by atmospheric cold, intense insolation and night time reradiation. Major contribution of the study include diverse species of plants in their specific geo-environment.Keywords

The present study is an attempt to prioritise the Balawal watershed on the basis of morphometric and landuse/landcover analysis using GIS approach. Linear and shape geomorphometric parameters of ten sub-watersheds have been studied individually. On the basis of morphometric and landuse/landcover analysis the subwatersheds fall into very high and high priority classes and immediate attention for soil and water conservation.Keywords

The indiscriminate use of chemical pesticides disturbs the soil environment, thereby affecting flora and fauna including soil microflora, and also the physicochemical properties of the soil, viz. pH, salinity, alkalinity, leading to poor soil fertility. With the application of pesticides, possibilities exist that these chemicals may exert certain effects on non-target soil microorganisms. The soil microbial biomass plays an important role in the soil ecosystem, where they fulfill a crucial role in nutrient cycling and decomposition. A series of field experiments were conducted at farmer’s field at Sitapur, UP with different modules of integrated pest management (IPM) including use of safe formulations. The impact of application of these pesticides on the soil properties including soil microbial populations, microbial biomass carbon and enzymatic activity was assessed. It was observed that soil microbial biomass C content and dehydrogenase activity was influenced by IPM interventions.Keywords

A line-source field dripper method based on steadystate solution of water flow from line-source water flow geometry is proposed for measuring unsaturated hydraulic conductivity function of the soil. The saturated hydraulic conductivity values obtained by linesource method were lower than those obtained by point-source field dripper method of Wooding and higher than the values obtained by inverse auger hole, constant head permeameter and infiltrometer methods for cultivated recently tilled normal soil, cultivated untilled normal soil, cultivated recently tilled sodic soil and uncultivated untilled sodic soil. The method is more reliable as it covers large soil volume.Keywords
